Key to understanding cosmic rays may lie with neutrino factories

New research has revealed that high-energy neutrinos and cosmic rays that bombard the Earth from profound space originate in blazars — actively galactic cores (AGN) that hide at the focal point of galaxies and are fueled by supermassive black openings.\n\nResearchers realize cosmic rays are charged particles from profound space that continuously hit Earth with energies as great as 1020 electron volts — a million times more vivacious than the energies generated at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Thus, Buson proposed that blazars — which produce more radiation than the whole stellar population of the galaxies around them — are answerable for blasting out high-energy neutrinos.\n\nIn 2021, she and her team set about solidifying this association with a multi-courier astronomy project, one that blends ‘traditional’ astronomy in with neutrino observations. These new outcomes were achieved using data from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory — the most delicate neutrino detector at any point created — located far below the ice of the south pole in Antarctica.\n\nThe team utilized this data to affirm that the location of blazars compared with the heading of astrophysical neutrinos frequently enough that this association couldn’t be put down to chance alone, providing the main strong proof of the association between astrophysical neutrinos and blazars.\n\n”After rolling the dice multiple times, we found that the random association can surpass that of the real data once in a million trials,” team part and researcher from the University of Geneva’s astronomy department, Andrea Tramacere, said. “This is solid proof that our associations are right.”\n\nAnd because these neutrinos are created in destinations where cosmic rays are accelerated and launched, this indicates that blazars are answerable for accelerating cosmic rays too.
