Abstract
Section titled āAbstractāField emission from metals was well understood nearly a century ago. Description of its core process given by Fowler and Nordheim was an early success of emerging quantum mechanics. Contrastively, in 1960ās and later on it was discovered that nonmetallic (III- V and II -VI semiconductors, diamond, carbon nanotubes, amorphous carbon) field emitters do not obey the very basic Fowler-Nordheim law.
