Electroreduction of carbon dioxide using platinum-iridium modified boron-doped diamond (BDD) with various platinum-iridium ratios

Abstract Modification of boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrodes with bimetallic platinum-iridium was studied. Combination techniques of wet chemical seeding and electrochemical deposition were performed with various Pt-Ir precursor ratios of (1:1), (1:2) and (2:1). These electrodes were then applied for electrochemical reduction of CO 2 dissolved in 0.1 M NaCl solution at the potentials of -1.1 V, -1.2 V, -1.3 V, and -1.5 V (vs Ag/AgCl) for 60 min. Electroreduction of CO 2 applied at PtIr(2:1)-BDD at the potential of -1.1 V (vs Ag/AgCl) produced formic acid, methanol and hydrogen as the main products.
